TAILS Workshop

Bring home a bootable USB drive with a current version of TAILS.

In this workshop, learn how to:
0. Talk to people about why you are on the dark web, and describe legitimate uses of TOR,
torproject, the guardian project, whistleblowers, ACLU, and privacy/anonymity in general.

1. Select TAILS options, what they mean, and observe how behavior changes
2. Create an encrypted persistent partition that will survive reboot / power off cycle
3. Create a document, and verify the document is persistent

4. Use TOR to request and sign up for a secure email account using protonmail or hushmail.

5. Verify you are using TOR (anonymizing network) using torproject, utrace, and ip6me
6. Use search engines for hidden services

7. Create a Bitcoin wallet with the default wallet in TAILS
8. Set up a Send or Receive transaction in your Bitcoin wallet

9. (Time perimitting): Set up TOR Browser on your smartphone
10. Overview of (next) Hidden Services Workshop

Prerequisites (without these your experience will be rather suboptimal):
a. Bring your own laptop, (WiFi enabled), power brick.   We will be using it for hours.
b. Know how to configure your hardware setting to boot from USB.
c. (Just in case:) Ethernet RJ45 cable, 8 to 12 feet long.  Ideally your WiFi is recognized and usable, but generally it's possible to use a wired Ethernet connection that will be provided.

Options:
i. Spare USB drive, start with an 8Gigabyte size, larger is probably a waste of space for now.
ii. External mouse and keyboard if it is more comfortable using them.
iii. Blank DVD disks to keep a disk copy of TAILS (for reinstallation if needed later)
iv. Smartphone (android preferred)

Workshop will provide:
- Bootable USB with TAILS operating system (bring home with you)
- Ethernet access in case your WiFi is not recognized
- Internet access for this session

NOTE:  The installation is intended to boot from USB and leave no trace, so in theory no damage can be done to your laptop.  If you want to be safe bring your spare, not your primary system.
